Novel Inlet Valve Transforms Single-Inlet Cylinders Into Flow-Through Type

E. F. Britten has developed a novel inlet valve arrangement for its single-inlet cylinders that allows the cylinder to act as a flow-through type, with the same advantages as that of a double-ended sample cylinder.

E.F. Britten novel inlet valve arrangement for its single-inlet cylinders that allows the cylinder to act as a flow-through type
The flow-through arrangement permits a purge gas to be fed into one of the valves. The gas then travels to the bottom of the cylinder through a dip tube. The gas then purges the cylinder as it eventually flows out of the top end of the cylinder via a second valve.

The valve package is available in brass or 316 stainless steel, and can be fitted to most of the company’s low-pressure, flat bottom cylinders, which range in size from 16 in3 to 145 in3.

High Frequency Discharge Ionization Detector in Helium

The HEI2 Detector, offered by Cosa Instrument, detects the ionization current produced by ionized molecules by a single high frequency discharge within the detector (HF plasma), resulting in a high energy photon emission (24.5eV). This emission ionizes all gases within the cell with the exception of Helium. The detector is ideal for measuring and controlling impurities in Helium (H2, O2 + Ar, N2,CH4. CO, and CO2). It may also be applied to measure and control impurities in other gases, including hydrogen, oxygen, and nitrogen.

The flame ionization detector is mainly composed of a flame ionization detector that is placed in a temperature regulated chamber to detect traces of hydrocarbons. Coupled with a methanizer, it also detects traces of CO and CO2. The combustion of hydrogen and synthetic air creates a flame in which organic components contained in the gas to be analyzed are burned off. When burning, these components produce ions that are collected by an electrode. The very weak current obtained in this way is amplified in an electrometer with high gain and directed to a recording system. A polarization electrode is connected on the level of the nozzle and the adjustable collecting electrode makes it possible to achieve the best results.

The main advantage of the HE12 detector is that the photoionized discharge is achieved without any radioactive emission and without excessive voltage being applied to the cell. Another important characteristic of the HE12 is that the detector operates on only one gas. This one gas is used as the carrier, the flushing gas, and the purging gas. This gas can also serve to purge and clean all valves.

Stack Gas Oxygen Analyzer Measures Excess Oxygen To Improve Energy Efficiency

Zircomat Oxygen Detectors, available from COSA Instrument Corp, are installed in power plants, refinery process heaters, blast furnaces, coke ovens, incinerators, small boilers, and furnace installations to achieve energy savings. A sample gas fed into the Zircomat detector is diffused to protect the sensor from exposure to sample gas contaminants, and a built-in verification port exposes the sensor to calibration gas. Calibrations can be performed manually or automatically at user programmable intervals.

The Zircomat transmitter, housed in a weatherproof enclosure, receives its signal through a cable that is terminated at the detector. Oxygen concentrations are displayed on a large three-digit LED display. Alarm conditions and operating mode are indicated by three LEDs. A second LCD displays additional information and for interactive setup of the instrument through a keypad.

The measurement range of the transmitter is programmable from zero to two percent v) oxygen to zero to fifty percent (v) oxygen in steps of 0.5 percent (v). The 4-20mA output signal is linear over the selected range and can be placed on hold for calibration and blowdown cycles. The blowdown, calibration, zero and span reference gas values are user programmable and are stored in nonvolatile memory.

The oxygen analyzer utilizes a unique probe measurement concept. Gas sample flow is deflected to the base of the probe where the detector is installed. The flow deflection is caused by one of two means—by a specially designed flow guide tube that takes advantage of the pressure of the stack or by an eductor system that utilizes a continuous small flow of compressed air. In either case, the probe remains in the stack while the detector can be replaced external of the stack.

Using the bar code identification on the manufacturer’s label or ID tag, along with CISPro’s tracking number, CISPro captures the cylinder data into a web-based database. Once in theCISPro database, users can check the status and location of any cylinder with absolute, validatable assurance that the cylinder data is correct. This means that no more cylinders are lost either at the organization’s site or in transit during shipping, thereby eliminating shipping and receiving disputes. In addition, because the exact status of all cylinders is known, the organization eliminates over purchasing of gases, resulting in greater purchasing efficiency.

CISPro enables users to track cylinders and other materials using a common inventory system that provides details on inventory by location, whether a single building or site, or multiple facilities and locations worldwide. Users can now know exactly when cylinders were received, when empty cylinders were picked up for return by the vendor, and who signed the paperwork.
