Q4 2008 / FABTECH in Fabulous Las Vegas!

As the ribbon was being cut for the FABTECH International & AWS Welding Show, introducing Metalform, in Las Vegas October 6-8, 2008, financial news from around the world was grim. The Dow dropped below 10,000 for the first time since 2004 and investors were fidgeting. But in Vegas, thousands of tradeshow attendees walked through the doors, lists in hand, planning to buy.

Pre-registration was at its highest level ever and the show delivered nearly 20,000 people to the floor, where more than 800 exhibitors displayed technologies from robotics, to gas storage and distribution systems, to lasers for material processing, computer software and yes, welding and cutting too. More than 500 new products were introduced.

The educational part of the program was broad as well. Including topics from “Competing and Winning in the Global Value Chain” to cost estimating job shops and welding education sessions. There was something there for every aspect of the broad businesses involved.
Many friends of SGR were there as well, either exhibiting or in attendance.

The new Mitsubishi laser-cutting instrument that is touted as the ‘most fuel efficient’ ever intrigued me. It sports 7Kw of power and uses just one cubic foot per eight-hour shift of resonator gas mixture!

Next year’s meeting will also include the Association for Manufacturing Technology (AMT), thus combining the efforts of several trade associations to produce an event with appeal to the full range of metal forming and fabricating professionals. The first show of this new collaboration will be November 15-18, 2009, at Chicago’s McCormick Place.

If you haven’t been to FABTECH recently, you need to go.
